💡 eIDAS is a European regulation that aims to make our online transactions safer and simpler. The revised regulation makes digital wallets and qualified trust services accessible to citizens and businesses. This enables citizens to sign documents from their wallet with a qualified signature, while businesses can secure information with qualified seals. Governments must unlock their authentic data via digital attestations, and qualified archives will ensure the long-term preservation of this cryptographic material. These developments will significantly impact the digital infrastructure of notaries. Digital identification and trust services will become essential in everyday practice, and notaries must be digitally prepared by 2026. Although 2026 is approaching quickly, eIDAS also offers opportunities for a simplified administrative process within the notarial sector.
➖ The bad news: despite various obligations, not everything under eIDAS is fully developed yet.
➕ The good news: you don’t have to wait for all components to be finalized to start transitioning and benefiting from eIDAS. Under eIDAS 1.0 (in effect since 2014), many of the functionalities have already become available and matured.
